Ira J. Gumberg
Chairman Emeritus
(1953-2025)
Ira J. Gumberg was Chairman of J. J. Gumberg Co. and also was a director of Gumberg
Global, an international concern through which Gumberg engaged in global real estate
development.
Mr. Gumberg led a fully integrated organization that focuses on the acquisition and
development of investment-grade real estate within the retail and commercial sectors. As a
third-generation leader, he was instrumental in growing the privately held company through
the careful analysis of retail trends, the recruitment and development of a highly
experienced executive team and the ability to act decisively in order to maximize new
growth opportunities.
Under Mr. Gumberg’s leadership, Gumberg launched its retail property division in 1977.
Since that time, the company’s retail properties have showcased more than 1,000 select
retailers, generating aggregate sales in excess of $2 billion annually. The company
expanded internationally and undertook an ambitious strategy in India where it developed
Western-style regional malls throughout the subcontinent.
Mr. Gumberg’s extensive background and proven leadership experience was recognized by
numerous corporations and organizations. Most recently, he served on the Board of Mellon
Financial Corporation from 1989 until 2007, where he was a member of the Executive
Committee and chaired the Compensation and Audit Committees.
In addition, from 1997-2021, he was a Trustee, Member of the Educational Affairs and
Enrollment Committee, Member of the Audit Committee, and Member of the Finance
Committee of Carnegie Mellon University. He was a Trustee of the University of Pittsburgh
from 2005-2022, where he served on the Budget and Investment Committees and was a
member of the Chancellor’s Global Advisory Council. He also was Chairman of the Board of
Visitors of the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business from
2011-2022.
Mr. Gumberg also sat on Gov. Tom Wolf’s Advisory Board on Energy, Business and
Economic Development and was an advisory board member to Audia Group, LLC. Mr.
Gumberg was involved in a variety of philanthropic activities with a particular focus on
higher education. Through the Ira J. Gumberg Family Foundation, charitable donations
have been made to such institutions as Georgetown University, Carnegie Mellon University
and the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, in 2011, Mr. Gumberg delivered the
commencement address for the University of Pittsburgh, Joseph M. Katz Graduate School
of Business and College of Business Administration. (Please click here for a full copy of his

Mr. Gumberg earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh in
1975 and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business, AMP.
His wife, Anita P. Courcoulas, M.D., serves as Professor of Surgery and Chief of Minimally
Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery at UPMC. They have four children.
